Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) Scientists Discover New Eel Species : According to Dr. Dhriti Banerjee, Director of the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI), the new eel species was discovered in the Petuaghat fishing harbour. Scientists of Zoological Survey of India have stumbled across new eel species in West Bengal’s Purba Medinipur district, a top ZSI official said.

Researchers have discovered a new species of Moray eel at the Mudasalodai fish landing centre off the Cuddalore coast. The species has been named after Tamil Nadu as Gymnothorax tamilnaduensis with common name as Tamil Nadu brown moray.

This is the first ever record of this genus, Gymnothorax, collected through an exploration survey conducted along the coastal waters of Cuddalore district, particularly, Parangipettai and Mudasalodai fish landing centres by Mr. Kodeswaran and Kantharajan.

The recently discovered eel species has been named Ariosoma Bengalense in name of its connection to the state. The species is distributed in the northern part of the Bay of Bengal, she explained. The color of the species is brown. The species has larger eyes in comparison to similar congeners. 

Four specimens (ranging from 272-487 mm in total length) were collected at a depth of about 25-30 metres from the fishing landing centre at Mudasalodai.

नई प्रजाति का नाम प्राचीन ओडिशा के नाम पर पिसोडोनोफिस कलिंग रखा गया है।
यह सांप की तरह दिखता है और इसकी लंबाई 560 मिलीमीटर से लेकर 7 मीटर तक होती है।
यह ऑफिशिचिड़ैपरिवार और एंगुइलिफोर्मेस गण से संबंधित है।
यह प्रजाति चिल्का लैगून, एशिया की सबसे बड़ी खारे पानी की लैगून और आसपास की पलूर नहर में पाई गई, जहां पानी का प्रवाह पूरी तरह से ज्वार पर निर्भर है। अतः विकल्प 4 गलत है।
नहर चिल्का को रुशिकुल्या नदी से जोड़ती है।
